March 2007 Po Boy Drums Endorses
Jason, ( The Clock ) Torres

Jason is currently selecting his custom
designed set with Po Boy Drums
Born and raised in
Denver, Colorado, Jason grew up listening to the funky sounds of The
Average White Band, Tower of Power, Steely Dan, The Ohio Players,
Brother’s Johnson, Santana, and Earth Wind & Fire. This type of
music allowed Jason to find and develop a distinct and steady
groove, and keep it solid in the pocket. When Jason was young his
Uncles and Grandparents played in a family band, and he would always
ask him mom to take him to their practices on Friday nights. Being
around this familial musical influence allowed him to develop a
special sense of timing and rhythm. He would watch and study his
uncles Danny and Steve play the drums with a close and “funky” eye.
He would ask them to show him some beats, and that’s all it took…
He later picked up
the drum sticks when he was 14 and began playing along with his
mom’s 45 records. He would drive everyone crazy tapping on anything
that was in front of him. It didn’t matter what it was, he could
always make it sound like a bass and snare drum. This behavior
unfortunately still occurs to this day! He destroyed many speakers
in his parent’s stereo learning how to groove, and develop his
style. It was always a “MYSTERY” why there was a popping sound that
went along to the music, whenever the volume was turned up past 5.
All of these learning experiences have developed Jason into the
drummer that he is today.
When he was 15, he
and his cousin Jerry Hermosillo formed a “garage band”. They played
punk and heavy metal cover songs for high school parties, and family
events. They later began writing more groove oriented originals and
formed the band Upper Hand in 1998, which played together for 6
years. They recorded and self produced a CD in 2003 titled Project
71. This was a major highlight for Jason’s musical career.
Jason has taught
drum lessons out of his home studio, and has several students
performing today. His drums of choice are DW, and he uses Zildjian
and Sabian cymbals. Jason joined the Buckner Funken Jazz Band in
2005, and adds a driving funky force to the group. Jason plans to be
with the group for a long time, and the band is glad that he has
decided to become a part of the Family.
Jason thanks his family, wife and their 2
wonderful kids for their support and understanding.
